MANILA, Philippines (1st UPDATE) - A man was found dead in Sta. Ana, Cagayan Friday morning with a gunshot wound to the head.
Police identified the victim as John Mari Ponce, 23.
Ponce was supposed to run for the 2013 Sangguniang Bayan elections.
Initial investigation showed that Ponce was shot above his left ear at 6:24 a.m.
Cagayan Police Chief Emil Bagarillo said they are still investigating whether the incident was a suicide or a self-accident.
Police are also investigating if someone else shot the victim.
Ponce was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Anthony Charity Hospital.
Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, meanwhile, clarified that they were not related.
Enrile said, however, that the parents of the victim were close friends of his family.
Ponce is the son of the administrator of the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority.
