MANILA, Philippines – A suspected medical officer of the New People’s Army (NPA) was killed in an encounter with military troops in Barangay Candoni East, Candoni, Negros Occidental early Tuesday, authorities said.

The fatality was identified as 25-year-old Julia Pacheco Tabat, reportedly a front medical officer of the NPA’s Southwest Front.

Authorities said her body was identified by her brother.

Lt. Col. Rodrigo Sosmena of the Army’s 47th Infantry Battalion said government troops were patrolling the area when they received information about the presence of 25 armed rebels.

He said soldiers engaged the rebels in a firefight for 10 minutes before the rebels retreated.

The military was able to recover backpacks and documents in the tents of the rebels after they fled from the area.

No one was injured from the government side. -- Report from Yasmin Pascual-Dormido, ABS-CBN News Negros
