MANILA – President Benigno Aquino III is hoping that the next administration will continue the national greening program, citing its gains in expanding forest cover in the country.
Speaking at the 2015 Community-Based Forest Management-National Greening Program Congress, Aquino said that 766 million seedlings were planted in 1.2 million hectares of land, beating the record of the four previous administrations.
Forest cover, he added, grew from 6.8 million hectares to 8 million.
"Ibig-sabihin niyan: mas malinis na hangin para sa milyon-milyon nating kababayan; mas masiglang kalikasan at mas napangalagaang likas na yaman, na mapapakinabangan ng mas nakararami," he said.
He also took pride in the decrease in the number of illegal logging hotspots in the country: from 197 to 23 in October. Confiscated logs were used in school building constructions while some were turned into school furniture.
Aquino also spoke of nature's role in preventing floods and combating climate change.
