'Ofel' death toll climbs to 10

MANILA, Philippines – The death toll from tropical storm “Opel” (international name: Son-Tinh) has climbed to 10, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

NDRRMC said two fatalities who drowned after a pump boat sank in Romblon were reported on Friday.

They were identified as Eve Fajutag and Grace Mallorca, two officials of the Department of Education.

The other casualties were identified as:

• Sophia Recto
• Rigel Saycon
• Solustiano Fabellon
• Olive Luna
• Roberto Manongsong
• Shiela Mea Resaba
• Princess Najera
• Mary Joy Canete

Nine others remain missing.

The NDRRMC said more than 10,000 individuals were affected by floods and landslides triggered by the storm.

More than 11,000 passengers were also stranded in various ports across the country, including ports in Batangas, the National Capital Region, Bicol, Visayas and northern Mindanao.

The storm made landfall over Siargao on Wednesday, bringing heavy rains to central Visayas and southern Luzon.

It exited the Philippine Area of Responsibility Friday afternoon and headed towards Vietnam.
