'Ofel' heads for Surigao del Norte

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Tropical depression “Ofel” continues to move towards the direction of Surigao del Norte, weather bureau PAGASA said Tuesday night.

Signal number 1 remains hoisted over the following areas in Visayas and Mindanao:

• Leyte
• Southern Leyte
• Eastern Samar
• Western Samar
• Bohol
• Camotes Island
• Dinagat
• Surigao provinces
• Agusan provinces
• Camiguin island
• Misamis Oriental

In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said “Ofel” was last seen 170 kilometers northeast of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur.

PAGASA said the tropical depression was carrying maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and moving west northwest at a speed of 15 kph.

It is expected to make landfall in Dinagat Island on Wednesday.

By Wednesday evening, it is expected to be in the vicinity of southern Leyte.

Moderate to intense rains are expected within Ofel’s 400 kilometer diameter.
