TACLOBAN CITY – Gerry Espina Sr., mayor of Kawayan town in Biliran, resigned from his post Sunday due to his health condition.

Espina submitted his resignation after his one-year leave expired. He is undergoing medications and treatment due to a liver ailment, but is now recovering.

"Of course [we let him resign] so that my father could rest, especially at his age of 76, and so that we could focus on his medications," said Espina's son and Biliran Governor Gerry 'Boy' Espina Jr.

Espina's other son, Rodolfo Espina, the vice mayor of Kawayan, will take over the post of his father.

Governor Espina hopes that his father's resignation would put an end to speculations that his father is already dead.

The governor said his father is fully recovering from his illness, but has no plan to go back to politics anymore.

He said the Espina patriarch wanted to spend his time with his family

Gerry Espina Sr. served as a congressman and a governor of Biliran before becoming the mayor of Kawayan.
