COTABATO, Philippines – At least 300 mahogany trees and more than 500 vetiver grass were planted by different media personalities who are members of the Kapisanan ng Mga Brodkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) Cotabato City chapter in Sitio Tenorio, Crossing Awang Datu Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao on Saturday.

This activity was done simultaneously with all the 32 KBP chapters nationwide under the theme "Tanim Mong Alay Sasagip Buhay".

KBP Cotabato president Bobong Calamba said the activity is a form of natural disaster preparedness and aims to help address the common problems during heavy rains such as soil erosion.

Calamba said fighting for and preserving the nature is one of the roles of a media practitioner.

Vetiver Forum, an organization advocating the vetiver planting, is also one of those who participated and supported the activity.

Its convenor, Aveen Acuña-Gulo, said vetiver grass is not just ordinary grass. It would absorb up to 70 percent of water and its roots could reach 10 to 12 feet underground which helps control soil erosion.

There were around 10 media entities and around 50 media practitioners in Cotabato City who participated in the tree planting, including ABS-CBN Cotabato, 92.7 Happy F.M, NDBC, DXMS 882, HOT FM, I FM and Kiss FM.

Also among those who supported the tree-planting activity were the Philippine National Police, Armed Forces of the Philippines and several non-government organizations.
