MANILA - Classes in numerous areas in northern Luzon are suspended from Monday until Wednesday this week, as the region reels from the effects of "Pepeng" (international code name Parma).
In an advisory from the Department of Education (DepEd), forwaded to ABS-CBN News by Pangasinan provincial administrator Butch Velasco, classes in elementary and secondary levels are suspended from Monday until Wednesday in the following areas:
Region 1: Entire province of Pangasinan, including the cities of Dagupan, Urdaneta, San Carlos, and Alaminos
Region 3: The towns of Paniqui, Moncada, San Manuel, Ramos, Anao, Pura, and La Paz in Tarlac province; and Cabanatuan City
Cordillera Administrative Region: Baguio City.
Classes in other areas, including Region 2, will resume, the advisory said.
However, the DepEd advisory said localized suspension may be declared by local government authorities in areas still flooded, or in schools that are used as evacuation centers or those unsafe for students.
The DepEd advisory only covers elementary and secondary schools.
Baguio: No classes, all levels
Earlier, Baguio City City Mayor Reinaldo Bautista announced Sunday that classes in all levels in the city are suspended from Monday to Wednesday this week.
Bautista said this is to help students who cannot return to Baguio after leaving the city for the weekend.
Baguio has been inaccessible by road over the weekend due to landslides and damage to roads leading to the city due to tropical depression Pepeng (international code name Parma).
As of Sunday, only Kennon Road, one of the major routes into Baguio, has been opened, and only for light vehicles. (Read: Report: Kennon Road now passable to light vehicles)
Meanwhile as of posting time, the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd), which oversees colleges and universities, has not yet made any declaration on class suspensions or resumptions in the areas affected by the disasters.
