MANILA, Philippines – Thousands joined the clean-up of the shoreline of Rosario in Cavite, the site of this year's International Coastal Clean-up Day.

The volunteers were mostly students, as well as government and private employees.

They collected trash along the 3-kilometer stretch of the shoreline.

Miss Earth Philippines 2012 beauties were also present.

Local divers from Rosario and the Philippine Coast Guard, meanwhile, conducted an underwater clean-up.

Another clean-up drive was also conducted in Quezon City, where residents dredged and cleaned waterways.

Tons of garbage were removed from waterways as hundreds of residents joined in the effort.

In Barangay Baesa, all sorts of garbage were removed from the esteros, which caused deep flooding during the strong “habagat” rains last August.

Organizers suggest that a monthly clean-up drive should be done to prevent floods. -- Reports from Jay Ruiz and Dominic Almelor, ABS-CBN News; ANC
