MANILA, Philippines – Acclaimed veteran director Joel Lamangan is running for congressman in the 1st District of Cavite in the 2013 midterm elections.

Lamangan, through a special power of attorney, discreetly filed his certificate of candidacy on Thursday under Partido Magdalo of Cavite Governor Jonvic Remulla.

Lamangan is running against the Liberal Party’s Francis Gerald Abaya, who is the brother of incumbent Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio “Jun” Abaya.

Abaya was recently appointed by President Aquino as Transportation and Communications secretary after the post was vacated by Mar Roxas.

Lamangan, who has tackled political issues in his early films, is a known activist and was a member of Kabataang Makabayan.
