ZAMBOANGA, Philippines – Convicted former Zamboanga del Norte Representative Romeo “Nonong” Jalosjos formalized his bid to run for Zamboanga City mayor as he filed his certificate of candidacy (COC) on Friday.

Jalosjos is the United Nationalist Alliance’s (UNA) standard bearer in the province.

However, his candidacy remains in jeopardy due to a petition filed by House deputy Speaker and 1st District Rep. Maria Isabel Climaco-Salazar and Jomar Lobregat, which sought the rejection of Jalosjos’s voter’s registration application.

The petition cited that a released convict will only be allowed to vote after 5 years.

Jalosjos, who was convicted of statutory rape, was released from prison in 2009.

Last September 27, the camp of Jalosjos received a copy of the Election Registration Board's decision denying their motion for reconsideration to accept Jalosjos's application for voter’s registration.

Jalosjos's legal counsel is set to submit to Zamboanga City Hall of Justice an appeal for reconsideration. -- Report from Jewel Reyes, ABS-CBN News Zamboanga
