BACOLOD, Philippines – Members of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and personnel from Petron Corp. are now busy containing an oil spill in the waters off Barangay Banago in Bacolod City caused by a leak from the underwater pipeline of the oil firm.

More than 60 liters of bunker fuel have already been surrounded by oil spill booms to prevent it from spreading in the sea.

According to the PCG report, the oil spill was reported to their office by local fishermen Sunday morning and authorities are now conducting an underwater survey to locate the source of the leak.

The result of their investigation showed that the oil leak started Saturday night.

Local fishermen expressed fears of a fish kill, which may greatly affect their source of living.

The PCG, meanwhile, said Petron will have to pay for any damage that the oil spill may cause to the environment and the local coastal community.
