Signal no. 3 still up in Batanes

MANILA, Philippines – Public storm warning signal number 3 remains hoisted over the Batanes group of islands due to typhoon “Lawin” (international name: Jelawat), weather bureau PAGASA said Thursday.

Storm signal number 2 is up over Cagayan including Calayan and Babuyan group of islands while storm signal number 1 is raised in Ilocos Norte, Kalinga, Apayao, Abra and Isabela.

In its 11 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said “Lawin” has maintained its strength, still carrying winds of 185 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph.

The typhoon was last spotted 200 kilometers east of Itbayat, Batanes and was seen moving northwest at 13 kph.

PAGASA expects the typhoon to be 120 km east of Taiwan by Friday night and 205 km west of Okinawa, Japan by Saturday night.

Residents living in coastal areas in Batanes and Cagayan are alerted against big waves or storm surges.
