MANILA, Philippines – The eye of typhoon "Lawin" is not expected to hit any part of northern Luzon but heavy rains are still expected over parts of Luzon and Visayas, a state weather forecaster said on Friday.

Speaking to dzMM, PAGASA forecaster Chris Perez said Lawin is already heading towards Taiwan but is still expected to bring rains and strong winds over areas where public storm warning signals are hoisted.

The Batanes group of islands remains under signal no. 3, while signal no. 2 remains up over Calayan and Babuyan groups of islands.

Signal no. 1, on the other hand, is still hoisted over Cagayan, Ilocos Norte and Apayao.

Lawin's center was located 220 kilometers northeast of Itbayat, Batanes at 4 a.m. It is expected to be 160 kms east of Taiwan by Saturday morning.

It has maintained its strength, still packing maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour near the center and gustiness of up to 220 kph.

It has also maintained its speed of 13 kph, but is now moving northward.

An estimated rainfall of 10 - 20 millimeters per hour (heavy - intense) is expected within the typhoon's 750-km diameter.

Those living in coastal areas are also warned of possible storm surges. Likewise, small fishing boats and sea crafts are advised not to venture out into the eastern seaboard of central Luzon; and the seaboards of southern Luzon and western Visayas due to big waves.

Based on PAGASA's 24-hour weather forecast for Friday, Calayan, Babuyan and Batanes groups of islands will experience stormy weather with rough to very rough seas.

Ilocos Norte, Cagayan and Apayao will have rains with gusty winds while MIMAROPA (Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan) will experience cloudy skies with occasional moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms.

Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon and Visayas will have occasional light to moderate rains and thunderstorms. Mindanao, on the other hand, will have partly cloudy skies with brief rainshowers or thunderstorms.
