MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - The chief of staff of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo clarified Wednesday that the Pampanga lawmaker's daughter, Luli Arroyo Bernas, is not running in the May 2013 elections.
"Luli is not running," said Arroyo's spokesperson, Elena Bautista Horn.
This, amid reports Luli may run to replace her ailing mother in the lower House.
The former leader is just on her 1st term as representative of the 2nd district of Pampanga. She is entitled to 2 more 3-year terms.
Arroyo is expected to file her certificate of candidacy next week.
A dzMM report earlier quoted an Arroyo ally, House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez, as indicating a possible candidacy by Luli.
Suarez said Mrs. Arroyo's condition remains unstable, adding that doctors have required her to again wear a neck brace due to numbness on her neck.
However, Suarez noted that there is still a possibility of Mrs. Arroyo filing her certificate of candidacy by next week if her condition improves.
Suarez also said the former President still has the last say on who will run in Pampanga’s 2nd district in next year’s elections.
Mrs. Arroyo recently said on Twitter that she has been suffering from numbness, pain and atrophy in different parts of the body near her surgical area.
She underwent surgery thrice last year to address a pinched nerve in her neck area. -- with a report from Jon Ibañez, dzMM
