MANILA -- Separate shooting incidents left barangay officials in Leyte and Isabela dead.

The barangay chairman of Inopacan, Leyte was shot dead by still unidentified motorcycle-riding gunmen Tuesday morning.

Celso Malanguis, 48, was shot in front of a livestock supply store along the national highway in Barangay Conalum.

Police said possible motives are Malanguis' campaign against illegal drugs or the barangay elections next month.

The victim's wife said her husband was also ambushed in 2010, also around the time of the barangay polls.

She added a grenade was also lobbed at their residence three days before the mid-term elections last May.

Meanwhile, the barangay chairman of San Guillermo was also shot dead in Angadangan, Isabela before dawn on Wednesday.

Rosendo Sigismundo's sister-in-law said she witnessed the killing which occurred at around 3 a.m. in front of a school in Barangay Calaccab.

Sigismundo sustained four gunshot wounds.

Police have yet to identify a possible motive for the attack.

Only a few weeks back, the president of the Liga ng mga Barangay in Angadangan was also shot. -- Reports from Geron Ponferrada, ABS-CBN News Tacloban; Janford Bonifacio; ABS-CBN News Isabela
