MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – More areas were placed under public storm warning signal number 1 as typhoon “Lawin” (international name: Jelawat) continued to move towards the direction of Cagayan and Batanes.
Under storm signal number 1 are:
• Batanes group of islands
In its 11 p.m. bulletin, weather bureau PAGASA said the typhoon has maintained its strength, still packing winds of 205 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 240 kph.
It was still moving north northwest and was last spotted 450 kilometers east of Casiguran, Aurora.
PAGASA weather forecaster Aldzar Aurelio earlier said there is a possibility that the typhoon will make landfall at the northern tip of Cagayan on Thursday.
The typhoon is expected to dump heavy to intense rains within its 850-kilometer diameter.
Moderate to heavy rains, meanwhile, are expected in southern Luzon and Visayas due to the typhoon’s effect on the southwest monsoon (habagat).
The typhoon is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility either by Friday or Saturday.
