MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Public storm signal number 1 has been raised over eastern Samar as tropical storm “Lawin” continues to gain strength, the state weather bureau said on Friday.
In its 5 p.m. bulletin, PAGASA said the storm is now packing winds of 85 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up 100 kph.
Lawin has slowed down and is moving in a west southwest direction.
PAGASA said the storm was last spotted 560 kilometers east of Catarman, northern Samar.
The storm is expected to bring moderate to heavy rains within its 600-kilometer diameter.
PAGASA also said there is a possibility of landfall in the eastern part of Southern Luzon or northern Luzon.
The weather bureau noted, however, that the storm is still far to directly affect any part of the country.
Meanwhile, the National Risk Reduction and Management Council raised a red alert status on Friday to prepare for the storm.
