MANILA, Philippines – An officer of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) threatened and punched a cameraman of ABS-CBN in Nueva Ecija on Friday.
ABS-CBN cameraman Carlo Dionisio
The cameraman, Carlo Dionisio, was covering a national event in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija and was waiting for an interview with President Aquino when the incident occurred.
According to Dionisio, he tried helping PIA officer Lyndon Plantilla to set up a microphone for the President’s interview.
Dionisio said that when he pointed to an audio box for Plantilla to plug in the microphone, the latter suddenly lost his cool and threatened the ABS-CBN crew member.
Dionisio then confronted Plantilla and asked him why he was being threatened.
At this point, Dionisio said Plantilla punched him and hit his left eye, before Plantilla was escorted out of the room by the President’s security.
Dionisio added that Plantilla continued to threaten him after he was escorted out.
Dionisio reported the incident to Palayan City Police.
Meanwhile, Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Sonny Coloma said in a statement that he has ordered an investigation, adding that he regrets the “unfortunate incident.”
“I have directed the immediate conduct of an investigation in accordance with civil service regulations. I wish to assure all media professionals involved in coverage of significant national events that we will continue to support and facilitate the performance of their vital duties without fear of impediment,” Coloma said. -- Report from Willard Cheng, ABS-CBN News
