CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Seven families in Barangay Gusa in Cagayan de Oro City lost their homes after these were swept away by floods when the Bigaan River overflowed Saturday afternoon.

The floods also swept plants and trees as well as damaged other houses.

Luzviminda Jipos was one of the affected residents. She was seen digging the ground where her house used to be. She was trying to recover some kitchen utensils buried by soil and mud.

“Wala gyud, bata ra akong gisiguro, ang lima nako kaanak (I wasn’t able to bring any of our things. I just secured the safety of my five children),” Jipos told ABS-CBN News.

Many of the residents who evacuated from their homes even failed to bring with them their extra clothes.

Meanwhile, Richelia Cantutay used an uprooted coconut tree as a temporary shade. This is the second time that her house was swept away by floods from the river.

“Diri ra pero magirog-irog rami didto sa daplin ba (We’ll just rebuild our house here, but move it away from the river),” said Cantutay.

According to residents living near the river, it is normal for them to experience floods due to heavy rains.

They may want to move to another place, but they do not have any place to go to. They said they will just bear the situation while waiting for the government to help them.  By Rod Bolivar, ABS-CBN News Northern Mindanao
