MANILA, Philippines – Authorities in Taytay, Palawan seized several live reptiles that were about to be shipped outside the country.

They said the reptiles were already inside MV Monte Carlo 1 when maritime police confiscated them.

Thirteen baby saltwater crocodiles and 31 turtles have been recovered.

Four dead anteaters were also seized by authorities. Anteater meat is considered a delicacy in China.

The live animals were turned over to the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development.

According to the director of Katala Foundation’s turtle project, two species of the turtles are critically endangered.

The Palawan Council for Sustainable Development wants a thorough investigation to determine who is behind the smuggling of the live animals. -- Report from Leila Gabinete, ABS-CBN News Palawan
