MANILA – The firefight between the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF)-Misuari faction and the military continued on Monday in Zamboanga City as the crisis entered its 8th day.

Fresh clashes between the two groups began in Barangay Santa Catalina around 6 a.m. Monday.

Another fire also erupted near the Zamboanga City Medical Center. Firefighters were working to contain the blaze as of posting.

The Bureau of Fire Protection believes Misuari's group is deliberately torching the buildings, using it as a signal that they are ready to attack.

The bureau estimates hundreds of houses have been burned in the city since the standoff began.

Meanwhile, members of the Regional Public Safety Battalion of the Philippine National Police (PNP) have been deployed to reinforce the troops deployed there. – ANC; Noel Alamar, DZMM
