TACLOBAN City, Philippines - Suspected Communist guerillas ambushed and killed a police intelligence officer in Catarman, Northern Samar, Monday morning.

Police identified the slain cop as Police Officer 3 Geronimo Tan, member of the Catarman police’s intelligence division.

Investigators said suspected New People’s Army (NPA) members ambushed Tan on a highway in Barangay Bangkerohan around 9:30 a.m..

Police said that according to witnesses, Tan was able to evade the first wave of shots fired by the rebels.

Tan ran to a nearby gasoline station, but was eventually killed by 2 gunmen on board a motorcycle.

Police believe that the gunmen are members of the NPA’s liquidation squad, Special Partisan Unit.

Tan’s killing came 3 weeks after 8 policemen were killed by suspected Communist rebels in Barangay Imelda, also in Catarman town.

Superintendent Brigido Unay, Northern Samar Police Provincial Office chief, has already relieved the Catarman police’s chief due to the latest ambuscade.

Unay has also placed all police units in the province on alert for similar attacks.
