BACOLOD CITY, Philippines - Yet another baby has been found abandoned, this time inside a passenger vessel.
Unlike the baby found inside the trash bin of a Gulf Air flight, this one was already dead when he was discovered inside a ferry’s comfort room last Monday.
A utility man said he found the body of an 8-month-old baby boy wrapped in plastic and stuffed inside a trash can in the comfort room of SuperFerry 19. The ferry was at sea and was on its way to Manila when the baby was discovered on Monday.
Ferry officials were able to locate the baby’s 30-year-old mother and brought her the Bredco port in Bacolod City, where she was subsequently turned over to police.
Inspector Jovy Cabcaban, head of the Bacolod City police’s Women and Children’s Desk, said the mother told investigators that she was wrapping the baby with plastic and was about to place him in a bag when she went unconscious.
Cabcaban said the mother denies that she intentionally killed and abandoned her own baby.
She said that the baby’s body will be subjected to autopsy to determine the real cause of death.
“Establish lang namin ang cause of death kung sinadya o incidental lang na nahulog,” the policewoman said.
Interviewed by ABS-CBN Negros, the mother said that when she regained consciousness she was shocked to see the baby already stuck in the toilet bowl.
“Matagal na siya nasa bowl bago ko siya nakuha,” the mother claimed.
She insisted that it was an accident and that her only mistake was that she failed to cry for help when the incident happened.
“Nawalan ako ng malay. Iyon lang ang kasalanan ko. Hindi ako nakahingi ng tulong,” she said.
Cabcaban said that they have learned that the mother had 3 children, and all of them also died during infancy.
She said that the mother could be suffering from a mental disorder. A case of infanticide is being readied against the mother. – Report from Yasmin Pascual-Dormido, ABS-CBN Negros
