MANILA, Philippines – Thirty-one households in a Mangyan community in Occidental Mindoro have been quarantined following the death of a woman from suspected meningococcemia.
Results of the blood samples taken from the suspected meningococcemia victim, 63-year old Gloria Simayan, have yet to be released. Simayan died last September 6, 2012.
Provincial Health Officer, Dr. Ner Agoncillo, said Simayan’s community is located in Sitio Camachile in Barangay Lumangbayan in the town of Abra de Ilog.
Those who were in close contact with the patient, including her immediate family, have likewise been quarantined.
Also under quarantine are school children and teachers who were in contact with the victim’s grandchildren; some members of the rural health unit and Sangguniang Bayan and municipal hospital staff.
They are all under observation and have been given prophylaxis. Blood samples collected from them were submitted to the Research Institute for Topical Medicine.
Dr. Agoncillo said they have yet to find out the origin of the disease caused by bacteria.
