Lanao Sur ex-mayor killed ahead of special polls

MANILA, Philippines - Armed men ambushed and killed a former mayor in Tugaya town, Lanao del Sur on Friday morning.

Police said former Tugaya town mayor Alimatar Guro Alim was on board a maroon Mitsubishi Pajero when an undetermined number of gunmen ambushed the vehicle in Barangay Dilimbayan around 7 a.m..

Alim died on the spot while his driver, Khalid Taher, and 3 companions, Jalani Alicasim, Asrin Sampao and Alvin Mustapha, were injured.

The former mayor's body has been brought to Barangay Pandiaranao, also Tugaya town, while the injured victims were rushed to the Amal Pakpak Medical Center for treatment.

Authorities said that the former mayor was on his way to Barangay Poona to join prayers for the end of Ramadan or Eid ul-Fitr.

Alim is seeking to regain the mayoralty post in the October 2 special elections in Lanao del Sur.

Elections in the province last May 10 was suspended due to reports of election cheating and violence.

The provincial police office said it has formed a special investigation task force to identify the ex-mayor's killers and determine the motive behind the killing. -- Report from Noel Alamar, radio dzMM
