MANILA, Philippines – A 63-year-old woman from Abra de Ilog, Occidental Mindoro died last Wednesday after allegedly developing meningococcemia.
According to a report from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), Gloria Sumayang of Brgy. Lumangbayan developed symptoms of upper respiratory tract infection and had fever for about a week.
Sumayang also developed rashes one day before being admitted to Abra de Ilog Community Hospital.
NDRRMC reported that the initial diagnosis considered was the Kawasaki Diseasse, but other symptoms showed that Sumayang may have been struck by meningococcemia.
Sumayang was later trasnferred to the Occidental Mindoro Provincial Hospital, where she eventually died.
She will be immediately buried at the public cemetery to prevent further spread of the infection.
Meanwhile, 30 families in Brgy. Lumangbayan have been placed under quarantine and are under observation by the Municipal Health Office.
Authorities have initiated chermoprophylaxis and are still monitoring the area for other meningococcemia cases. -- Report from DZMM.
