CATARMAN, NORTHERN SAMAR - The archdiocese of Catarman has condemned the killing of Fr. Cecilio Lucero, parish priest of Catubig town in Northern Samar province and brother of former congressman Wilmar Lucero.

"He is a priest, and what happened is not just an ordinary killing. Father Lucero has been a good priest and is very active with helping people." Bishop Emmanuel Trance of Catarman added.

Lucero is the chair of the Human Rights Desk in the province and is also an officer of the peace and order council here.

Police is reportedly pursuing an investigation into the ambush of the priest early Sunday morning. They are also looking at different angles of the killing, which includes politics.

"We are looking into various angles based on the accounts of the witnesses and the revelations of the family," said Senior Superintendent Eusebio Mejos, provincial police chief.

The Lucero family however wanted to include in the investigation the security escort of the priest who “miraculously” survived the incident and was left unharmed by the armed assailants who killed the priest.

Fr. Lucero's body will be laid to rest on September 14 at Gamay in Northern Samar, his family’s hometown. By Jenette Fariola-Ruedas, ABS-CBN Tacloban
