LAGUNA - Two chiefs-of-police in Laguna province died while another police officer was injured when a wayward passenger jeepney slammed into their patrol car parked along the highway in Calauan town early Tuesday morning.
Laguna police director Senior Superintendent Gilbert Cruz identified the fatalities as Senior Inspector Alex Marasigan, chief of the Victoria police station, and Police Chief Inspector Santiago Cuntapay, chief of the Calauan police station.
Slightly injured was PO3 Rodel Reyes Cardel. He was discharged from the hospital after being treated.
According to Cruz, the victims were in front of the Calauan police station preparing to attend a Crime Prevention Activity in Calamba City when the tragedy struck around 5:00 a.m.
Investigations revealed that the victims were about to board the patrol car parked at the shoulder of the North bound highway of Barangay Bangyas, when a jeepney (DxD-978) driven by Leonilo Resurreccion, 53, crashed into the rear-end of the police car.
"Nag-lalakad na sa bandang likuran ng patrol car sina Capt. Marasigan at Major Cuntapay nang maipit sila ng rumaragasang jeepney,” Cruz said.
Marasigan was killed on the spot while Cuntapay died while being treated at the Asian Hospital in Muntinlupa.
All jeepney passengers, however, escaped the accident unscathed.
“Mukhang nakatulog ang driver ng jeep dahil madaling araw ito nangyari,” Cruz said. “Kung nawalan ng brakes ang jeep dapat doon na nya (driver) dinala sa open field, sa walang taong masasagasaan,” Cruz said.
Cruz immediately cancelled the event in Calamba and instead offered prayers for the victims.
Resurreccion, a resident of barangay Binan, Pagsanjan, Laguna, is presently detained at Calauan police station and will face charges.
