MANILA - A magnitude 5.3 earthquake struck east of Quezon province on Wednesday night, shaking areas as far as Metro Manila.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake hit at around 9:43pm near Jomalig Island.

The quake, which was tectonic in origin, was a shallow tremor and was thus felt more strongly.

Intensity 3 was felt in Quezon City, Mandaluyong City, Guinayangan, Quezon, and Gapan, Nueva Ecija.

Meanwhile, intensity 2 was felt in Sta. Rosa, Laguna; Tanza, Cavite; and Makati City.

There were no immediate reports of damage.

Aftershocks are expected but the quake did not trigger a tsunami, Phivolcs said.
