MANILA, Philippines – A magnitude 5.6 earthquake hit Bukidnon in Mindanao before dawn Tuesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

Phivolcs said the earthquake occurred at 3:44 a.m. Its epicenter was located 15 kilometers northwest of Maramag town.

The following intensities were felt:

  • Intensity V - Musuan, Maramag (Bukidnon)
  • Intensity IV - Valencia City (Bukidnon); Arakan, North Cotabato;
  • Intensity III - Malaybalay City (Bukidnon); Cagayan De Oro City, Misamis Oriental; Kidapawan City
  • Intensity II - Butuan City; Cotabato City

The earthquake was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 3 kms.

Phivolcs said aftershocks are expected from the earthquake.

An aftershock with a magnitude of 4.9 then occurred at 3:52 a.m. Its epicenter was located 2 kms southwest of Maramag town.

Intensity III was felt in Musuan, Maramag and Valencia in Bukidnon; and Intensity II in Cagayan de Oro City. The quake was also tectonic in origin and had a depth of 3 kms.
