MANILA – A small wave measuring 16 centimeters (cms) hit Surigao City Friday night, following a 7.7 earthquake that struck off the eastern side of the archipelago, Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum said.
Solidum said the 16cm-high wave may just be a first wave, and he advised residents in coastal areas of Surigao to remain on alert.
“’Yung mga susunod na waves ay maaaring mas mataas. Ang second at third waves ay kadalasan mas mataas kaysa una,” he told dzMM.
He said he has yet to receive reports of waves hitting the eastern side of Samar, Leyte and Siargao islands, where a tsunami alert warning 3 has been raised.
Solidum added that Surigao City experienced aftershocks, the strongest of which recorded with a magnitude of 6.2.
