MANILA, Philippines - Catholic bishops today urged vigilance from the public as President Aquino chooses a replacement for the late Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse Robredo.
In a report from the CBCP News, retired Archbishop Oscar Cruz said the pick for the next Department of Interior and Local Government Secretary merits serious public attention.
“The people should remain vigilant this early because this means that he will have a replacement,” said Cruz, who has gotten close to Robredo because of their stance against jueteng.
Pabillo, chairman of the CBCP’s National Secretariat for Social Action, Justice and Peace (Nassa), for his part, said Robredo’s replacement will have very big shoes to fill.
“This is a big challenge for the government to find someone who can do the job rightly like what secretary Robredo did,” he said.
Robredo died in a plane crash on Saturday. His body was retrieved on Tuesday.
Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. was named as the agency’s officer-in-charge.
Even when Robredo was still alive, several names have already been rumored to replace him, including Senator Panfilo Lacson.
