CEBU - Many professionals in Cebu are ready for Monday's protest against the distribution of pork barrel funds.

Lawyer Democrito Barcenas, former Integrated Bar of the Philippines-Cebu president, is among those who will join the protest.

Barcenas, in a phone interview, said many lawyers, doctors, businessmen, students and Rotarians will be joining the protest.

The campaign started via social networking site Facebook and through SMS.

Barcenas said that no one organized the activity and members group just started to agree that on Monday, they will wear white shirts and will march from Plaza Independencia to Fuente Osmeña Circle around 8 a.m.

Barcenas said that they are expecting hundreds of Cebuanos to join the protest to abolish pork barrel funds.

"We believe that pork barrel funds is the number one source of graft and corruption of public officials. They get kickbacks, payoffs, and commissions in projects funded by pork barrel," said Barcenas.

He referred to a Commission on Audit special report on the alleged misuse of pork barrel funds during former President Gloria Arroyo's administration.

Barcenas said senators and congressmen were elected to make laws. He said that it can be part of the executive's duty to implement projects using the same funds that are given to senators and congressmen.

Barcenas is a member of Liberal Party in Cebu. However, he said that his decision to join the protest is his personal stand on the issue.

"I maybe a member of LP but first and foremost, I am a Filipino, it is my duty to look after my country," said Barcenas.
