MANILA, Philippines – Classes in several Maguindanao towns remain suspended due to the conflict between government troops and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement (BIFM).

According to the Department of Education-Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DepEd-ARMM), classes in 28 schools in the towns of Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Datu Unsay and Ampatuan have been suspended since August 5.

DepEd-ARMM Sec. Atty. Jamar Kulayan said some of the schools cannot accommodate students because they are being used as evacuation centers for families displaced by the fighting.

Kulayan said the DepEd has instructed school principals to find ways to conduct classes in evacuation centers to make up for missed sessions.

The Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said a total of 2,474 families are currently staying in evacuation camps, as of posting.

The ARMM government has not allowed the families to return to their homes until the conflict is resolved. -- Report from Lore Mae Andong, ABS-CBN News Central Mindanao
