MANILA, Philippines -- Police had to barricade social welfare workers after evacuees in Rodriguez, Rizal became unruly as they fought to get relief goods.

President Benigno Aquino III was there on Sunday morning to supervise the distribution of relief goods.

All hell broke lose, however, when Aquino left for another relief operation.

Municipal social welfare office chief Delilah Chua said the crowd became uncontrollable.

"Hindi na naging disiplinado. Gusto nila, lahat sila makakuha all at the same time na imposible," she said.

She stressed that they had enough goods for the families there. "Sakto 'yung dinala namin, sa tingin namin sapat 'yun. Pero may narinig (kami), pwedeng isang bahay, madoble (ang kuha),” she explained.

Evacuees complained that some residents were able to get relief goods even if they have not been affected by the floods.

The police arrested an old woman who went livid after failing to get her share. – from a report by Dennis Datu, dzMM
