MANILA, Philippines – Three government soldiers and a civilian died after their detachment in Mabini, Compostela Valley was attacked by the New People’s Army on Tuesday morning.
The slain victims were identified as Sgt. Danilo Baniued, militiamen Ricardo Diaz and Raul Consulta. The civilian was identified as the latter's wife, Cecilia.
A military report said members of the rebel group arrived aboard two Canter trucks around 9:30 a.m. The rebels engaged the government troops in a 50-minute encounter.
Eastern Mindanao Command spokesman Col. Leopoldo Galon said the rebels were clad in military uniforms.
"That's always the case, they are sticking with that tactic. They (rebels) wear military uniforms to deceive, but the soldiers are already informed about this tactic," Galon said.
Galon said they have already deployed government troops to pursue the rebels responsible for the attack.
The attack occurred while Armed Forces chief Gen. Eduardo Oban was in the region for a visit.
