Ex-Navy officer, wife, 3 others massacred in Palawan

PUERTO PRINCESA, Philippines – Five people. including a retired Navy official, were found hacked to death by still unidentified suspects while inside their house in Barangay San Miguel in Puerto Princesa City on Monday afternoon, police said.
Senior Superintendent Cesar Miranda, Puerto Princesa City police chief, identified the victims as retired Lt. Commander Ernesto Paiton, 59; his wife, Chief Petty Officer Carmelita Paiton, 55; their registered nurse daughter Erlita Paiton, 21; niece Sharon Cabatuan, 19; and, nephew Renato Cabatuan, 17.
According to the police report, the Puerto Princesa police station received a phone call from a certain Sheryl Cabatuan and reported that she found her sister and relatives sprawled in a pool of blood inside their house around 6:30 p.m. Monday.
“Dumating si Sheryl at pinsan nitong si Ernesto Paiton Jr sa kanilang bahay at nasilip nila sa bintana ang kanilang mga kaanak. Kaya agad silang nag-report sa police station,” said Inspector Harold Tocino, Puerto Princesa police’s chief investigator.
Tocino said the massacre possibly happened between 12:00 noon and 6 p.m. before the bodies were discovered by Sheryl and Paiton Jr.
Probers said Carmelita, Sharon and Renato were found hogtied inside the comfort room.
Police said the victims sustained multiple stab and hack wounds in different parts of their bodies.
“Mukhang malaki ang galit noon mga suspek sa pamilya ng biktima dahil sa dami ng natamo nilang mga saksak,” Tocino added.
Police are now conducting a follow-up operation to identify and arrest the suspects. They have yet to determine the motive of the killing.
