ZAMBOANGA - An 8-year-old boy died after being hit by a speeding sports utility vehicle (SUV) along the highway of Barangay Culianan, Zamboanga City past 8 a.m. on Thursday.
The victim, identified as Cyrus Ramadjo, sustained multiple head injuries in the incident.
According to the victim's grandmother, Corazon dela Cruz, they were crossing the road together with her 2 other grandchildren when Ramadjo let go off her hand and ran towards the side of the road.
A speeding SUV, coming from downtown Zamboanga City, then accidentally hit the boy and dragged him a few meters away from the point of impact.
The driver of the SUV, Romeo Lucero, initially tried to escaped by leaving the lifeless body of the boy along the road.
But he was intercepted by policemen along the highway of the adjacent barangay in Sangali just minutes after the fatal accident.
Lucero claimed he did not try to escape and was only avoiding the angry relatives of the victim as well as bystanders. He said he was afraid he and his family would be attacked.
He added that he was already on his way to turn himself in a nearby police station when he was intercepted along the highway.
Lucero now faces a case of reckless imprudence resulting to homicide and will be subjected to inquest proceeding on Friday.
