MANILA, Philippines – Traffic at the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) is now free-flowing as floodwaters continue to subside, according to NLEx Vice President for Traffic Gerry Aberilla.
Aberilla told ANC on Tuesday that as of 5:35 p.m., the situation at the expressway has “normalized” and vehicles are now able to pass through.
Aberilla said the deep floods at the highway were caused by the overflowing of nearby rivers and possibly the release of water from nearby dams.
Thousands of passengers were earlier stranded due to floods that reached the expressway’s concrete barriers.
At around noon, Balintawak and Valenzuela were impassable to all types of vehicles.
Aberilla said emergency response teams have since cleared debris from the expressway following the floods.
However, he said the teams are still on standby as rains are expected to continue through the evening.
