MANILA – Two teenage boys went missing on Tuesday after going for a swim in the Agno River at the height of rains.
Rodnel Justo and Ronald Perez, aged 15 and 14 respectively, were with five other friends when they jumped into the river from a hanging bridge in Bautista, Pangasinan.
After seeing the two being swept by strong current in the swollen river, the five other minors decided not to take a plunge and alerted authorities about the incident.
''Iyung dalawang biktima lumalabas na dumadaan sila sa hanging bridge at nauna silang tumalon, so dahil sa pag-ulan ulan, medyo tumaas yung tubig at lumakas iyung current ng tubig kaya tinangay sila ng agos,'' said PO3 Benjie Mondero, spokesperson of the Bautista Police.
One of the companions of the victims said the two were not forced to dive first.
Meanwhile, Susina Justo, mother of Rodnel, hopes that her son's body will still be recovered so he could be given proper burial.
''Ang alam ko nasa computer shop lang siya kasi dati-rati nandyan lang siya sa computer shop. Tapos biglang may nagpunta rito at sinabing may nalunod na dalawang bata. Hindi ko na maalala reaksyon ko noon, masama ang loob ko,'' she said.
Authorities said the Agno River swelled due to rainfall coming from the Cordillera mountains.
Operations are underway to retrieve the bodies of the victims. – report from Aldrin Soriano, ABS-CBN News North Central Luzon
