MANILA, Philippines – A high school student in Lipa City, Batangas died after he was allegedly punched in the face by an older schoolmate.
The victim, identified as Patrick Sayas, was allegedly punched in the head by the 17-year-old suspect, whose identity is being withheld, last Wednesday inside the Fernando Air Base National High School.
Patrick, 14, slipped into a coma after a portion of his brain swelled. He eventually died at the N.L. Villa Memorial Medical Center on Thursday.
John Sayas, Patrick’s father, said the school must be held responsible since the incident occurred within the school premises.
“Iyung principal parang balewala sa kanya at hindi niya ako hinarap, inuna niya iyung pakikipag-usap niya dun sa mga bisita niya,” John said.
One of Patrick’s classmate said the suspect had been bullying Patrick.
The school administration, meanwhile, declined to give any statement regarding the incident.
The suspect is now under police custody.
Meanwhile, Aurora Rep. Sonny Angara said this latest incident of school bullying that resulted in the death of a student underscores the need for a law that would hold schools responsible for any bullying incident.
Angara filed the “Anti Bullying Act of 2010” during the fifteenth Congress that will require school administrations to adopt anti-bullying policies.
In the bill, Angara cited a study that said 5 out of 10 pupils from Grades 1 to 3; 7 out of 10 pupils from Grades 4 to 6; and 6 out 10 high school students are experiencing or have experienced bullying. - report from Ernie Manio, ABS-CBN News Southern Tagalog
