AGOO, La Union -- Concerned parents are complaining over school officials' decision to send their students to clean premises in a bid to battle dengue.
A leading public school here, Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, suspended classes on Wednesday but ordered a "Clean-up Day" for students from high school to college.
Students who do not attend the "Clean-up Day" will be penalized with an 8-hour community service.
A concerned parent said health officials should be the ones sent to battle dengue.
Dengue cases here are on the rise because of the extreme weather conditions. Some students have suffered dengue twice.
A dengue outbreak has previously been declared in Agoo and several municipalities of La Union.
Recent typhoons brought massive floods in several areas, making them fertile breeding grounds for dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
