COTABATO CITY, Philippines – One of the suspects in the Maguindanao massacre case has died after he was shot in an encounter between the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s 105th and its 106th Base Command in Sultan sa Barongis town in Maguindanao, authorities said.
He was identified as PO1 Abbey Guiadem, one of the 196 suspects charged in the 2009 massacre that left at least 57 people dead in Ampatuan town.
Sultan sa Barongis Police Chief Insp. Cesar Ibal, Jr. said they received information from a police asset saying that Guiadem was wounded during the encounter.
Upon confirmation, the local police of Sultan sa Barongis informed the Maguindanao police and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group-ARMM for proper service of a warrant of arrest.
Guiadem was then arrested in his house at Barangay Papakan and due to his serious medical condition was rushed to the hospital.
Guiadem expired on the way to the hospital last Sunday, July 29, said authorities.
They have yet to determine, however, if he was involved in the encounter or just a victim of cross fire.
Guiadem was allegedly close to former Datu Unsay Mayor Andal Ampatuan, Jr, the prime suspect in the massacre.
Guiadem was also the former chief of police of Datu Unsay town even if he was just holding a PO1 rank.
Out of 196 suspects in the massacre, 99 are already in the hands of the government while 97 are still at large.
