Suspected NPA rebels attack military operations in Batangas

BATANGAS, Philippines – A 30-year old member of the Philippine Air Force was killed while another soldier was wounded in 2 separate encounters with suspected communist rebels in the Balayan and Calatagan towns Friday evening, police said.

Batangas Police Public Information Officer Supt. Arcadio Ronquillo identified the fatality as Sergeant Dionisio Lerio Tanguilig, resident of Barangay Cantaños Lejos, GMA, Cavite and member of the PAF 730th Combat Group assigned at Barangay Patugo Detachment in Balayan, Batangas.

Wounded was identified as Private First Class Rommel de Leon, 24, a native of Palawan and member of Charlie Coy 16th IB, 2nd ID, Philippine Army, assigned at Barangay Hukay Detachment in Calatagan, Batangas.

According to a police report, members of the Philippine Air Force Special Operation Team were conducting military operations at Barangay Patugo in Balayan when suspected members of the New People’s Army opened fire.

Police said the firefight lasted 30 minutes before the rebels retreated to an unknown place.

Tanguilig sustained several gunshot wounds in different parts of his body. He was rushed to the Apacible Memorial District Hospital in Nasugbu town where he was declared dead on arrival.

In Calatagan, De Leon was guarding the detachment’s front gate when alleged members of the NPA lobbed three hand grenades in his direction.

He sustained multiple wounds and was also rushed to the Apacible Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Police and military officials are now on hot pursuit operations against the rebels.#
