Suspects in Tanauan City ambush nabbed
BATANGAS -- Police have arrested a former barangay chairman and his nephew after they were tagged in the death of three people in an ambush in Tanauan City on Monday afternoon.
Tanauan City police chief Superintendent Chris Olazo identified the suspects as Basilyo Panganiban, 55, an employee of Calamba City Hall, and former barangay chairman of Kay-Anlog, Calamba, Laguna.
Also arrested was Anthony Panganiban, 34, an IT technician and resident of Barangay Kay-Anlog, Calamba, Laguna.
Olazo said the suspects were identified by victims who survived the ambush.
"Si Anthony ay positibong itinuro ng batang witness na siyang bumaril sa mga biktima. Nanginginig pa nga 'yung bata kapag nakikita niya ang suspek" Olazo said.
Meanwhile, former barangay chairman Panganiban was implicated as the alleged mastermind when a witness allegedly heard one of the gunman uttered "tawagan mo na si Kapitan Basil, patay na ang mga ito" after the ambush, Olazo said.
The victims Juan Visaya, 47, Sofia Visaya, 69, and Pedro Oruga, 56 were on their way home to Barangay Pantay Bata, Tanauan City, after attending a wake in Calamba City, when they were waylaid upon reaching Barangay Laurel in Tanauan City.
Valeria Visaya, 63, was seriously wounded and is currently being treated at the C.P. Reyes Hospital for a gunshot wound in her face.
Olazo said a land dispute could be the motive behind the shooting incident.
