LAOAG - Lightning killed two farmers and injured two others while they were planting rice at Naglicuan village in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte Monday.

Authorities identified the fatalities as Joven Ratuita Senior, 44, and Arnel Galiza, 30. Fellow farmers Eddie Villanueva and Nick Cornelio were injured by the lightning strike.

The four farmers were planting rice at around 5 p.m. when lightning struck.

Ratuita and Galiza were rushed to hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival. Cornelio has been discharged from the hospital while Villanueva is under observation.

The victims' relatives mourned the loss of their loved ones, saying the two farmers only wanted to provide for their families.

Officials urged farmers to go home or seek shelter every time there is a thunderstorm to avoid a lightning strike.
