DAPITAN CITY - Mary Antoinette Acedo, a beauty pageant contestant who died after overdosing from slimming pills, was declared winner of the Miss Dapitan 2015 pageant Thursday night.

According to Jason Selves, pageant organizer, they named Acedo as Miss Dapitan 2015 as tribute to the late contestant.

"The committee decided to have a tribute to Miss Maan Acedo, obviously she died, one of the reason of that is the preparation for Miss Dapitan," Selves added.

The other contestants also agreed with the decision of the organizers.

"It was really okay for me because I think that it was a way of paying tribute to her since she passed away," said Zaira Claine Gudmalin, Miss Dapitan 2015 first runner-up.

Acedo died in the hospital after suffering from stomachache, diarrhea and experiencing vomiting.

The victim's mother said Acedo had been taking slimming pills she bought online in preparation for the pageant.

Dr. Rosinee Monte confirmed that Acedo took too many slimming pills, based on laboratory results.

Monte added that Acedo took four pills a day, which is the recommended dose for an obese person.

Acedo, however, was not obese and only weighed 40 kilograms. -- report from Dynah Diestro, ABS-CBN News Northern Mindanao
