MAGUINDANAO, Philippines – A fisherman off the coast in Parang, Maguindanao found a lifeless ocean sunfish or a “Mola mola”, believed to be endangered.
Authorities said it was the first time a Mola mola was seen in Philippine waters.
The endangered specie was previously seen in Japan, Taiwan and the Korean Peninsula.
“Usually nakikita ito sa mga malalim na parte ng dagat, nakikita ito sa Japan, Taiwan at Korea. We will look into this kung paano siya nakarating sa area, na-trap yata ito,” said Macmod Mamalangkas, research head of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-ARMM
The fish was sent to the BFAR office in Manila to be examined.
BFAR will also conduct a study to determine how the fish reached Parang. -- Report from Lerio Bompat, ABS-CBN Central Mindanao
