MANILA – Four Filipino fishermen were rescued by the crew of a Chinese cargo vessel off Palawan, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) said.

PCG Port State Control Commander Wynchester Florentino said the four fishermen, identified as RJ Mojico, Antonio Bon, Jaymar Selin, and Marjohn Aballe, were rescued by Chinese crew on board MV Pacific Pioneer.

MV Pacific Pioneer came from Hong Kong, Florentino said.

Florentino said the fishermen, who originated from Paluan, Occidental Mindoro, were rescued by the Chinese after floating in the waters off Palawan for one day and one night.

The Filipino fishermen said their boat was destroyed by strong waves caused by the onslaught of typhoon ''Glenda''.

The fishermen said they were not aware of the incoming typhoon because their transistor radio was not working.

They are set to undergo medical examination before being brought back to their hometown. – report from Noel Alamar, dzMM
